If you live on the flood plain, then you know you need to lessen the effects of flood damage. These floods can’t be predicted, so making sure you have steps in place to protect the integrity of your home is important. You should always follow the evacuation plans if they come up, and remember to keep your safety first.

You do need to assess the risk of flooding damage happening to you. If you live in an area where it is likely, then you need to try and figure put how bad it could get. You can go to your City Hall and ask if they can help you find a flood map, so you may be able to determine how badly your home can be affected.

If you have your house where the flooding is possible, and the damage risk is high, then you need to safeguard your appliances. Laundry, water heaters and furnaces need to be at least a foot above the projected flood line, or moved to an upper floor. These can be placed on blocks to get them to the height, and you can buy a furnace that installs on the ceiling.

In basements, you will want to have a working floor drain. You can also have a floating plug installed that can help to open the drain when it floods. Once it’s been installed, you will need to check it on occasion to make sure that it will work when you need it and is free from clogs.

You may also want to have a professional install a back flow valve onto your sewage line. This can keep the sewer from backing up into your home during a flood. It can also help to save you a nasty, and very costly, repair bill by preventing it from happening in the first place.

You should keep electrical switches and breaker boxes above the flood line as well. Checking your electrical wires and keeping them in good working order can protect your electrical system from shorting out in a flood. This can keep you safe as well as keep your system working.

A sump pump can also be installed. If you get one, you need to make sure that you have an alternative source of power to work it in a flood. This removes water quickly and can keep damage to the walls and foundations lower then letting it drain on its own.

Insurance is also important. You will need to get this through the federal government, and renters and owners alike can apply for it. There is a waiting period for the policy to go into effect, so it is better to get this before floods are a seasonal concern.

These few steps can help reduce the water flood damage. No matter what you decide to do, you should always have an emergency arrangement for the safety of you and your family. This is the most important thing to reduce the home flood damage.
